Hot Weather Racing and Travel Policy Reminder

With summer rapidly approaching, it is timely for LPs to review their responsibilities under the GRNZ Hot Weather Racing and Travel Policy. To summarise:

- The Policy is activated when the temperature reaches, or is forecast by The Met Service to reach, 30ºC on the day of racing or trials.

- Meetings will be abandoned should the temperature reach 35ºC. No unofficial trials are to take place where a meeting is abandoned due to hot weather.

- GRNZ will work with clubs to reschedule meetings (days or times of day) where possible to avoid forecast heat.

- Greyhounds may be scratched without penalty at Stewards’ discretion when the Policy is activated.

- Active cooling (hosing until recovered) of greyhounds post-race is essential to prevent heat illness.

- Greyhounds must be re-kennelled in airconditioned race-day kennels after racing for a minimum of 30 minutes unless they can go into an airconditioned vehicle. Greyhounds must be provided with water while in the kennels or vehicle after racing.

- Vehicles must be pre-cooled before transporting greyhounds in hot weather to prevent heat stress.

- Maintaining hydration is important in preventing heat stress. Greyhounds should be offered water regularly in hot weather.
